The earliest record of harness racing at the Brandywine Raceway near Wilmington in the state of Delaware was on Monday 7th September 1953, with racing supported by the Philadelphia Harness Horsemens Association. The original 4 furlong oval track welcomed over 13,500 fans to that inaugural meeting, the crowd enjoying the success of Head Pin in the opening race. Racing continued for an unbroken run of 36 years, enjoying good times in the mid-1970s when the track was extended to 5 furlong, before the final meeting on Thursday 28th December 1989. Today the only reminder of the former racecourse is the name of the housing development, Brandywine Hunt, built on the site of the old racecourse. |
